Silver Torc Necklace From Gujarat

The word Torc is derived from the Latin verb torquis meaning to twist.    This neck ring form is ubiquitous through prehistoric times.  For example, the ancient Celts crafted Torcs by twisting bands of metal around a core of iron or sometimes wood.

This silver, continuous wire torc is from Kutch, Gujarat. This type of torc would be an important part of a bride's dowry and would be given to her by her father or prospective father-in-law.   This weighty item would have been a prized item.

Dimensions:  the maximum inner diameter is 14.5 cm and the torc has a hook fastening at the front.
